Historical Notes

The Sarafan was first mentioned in Russian chronicles in the year 1373, which are closely associated with the Grand Principality of Moscow. They are evolutions of the Viking apron dress and loose Persian robes. The dress started out tighter on the body but became looser and fuller with the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church.

After the clothing edicts of Peter the Great in 1699, the ruling classes switched to European fashion, while the peasants, rural people, and those who rejected his reforms still wore the older clothing styles. A consequence is that old believer communities in the former Soviet Union still wear them.
